// ABOUT THE SOFTWARE FARM

The Original Software Farm (1980s)

The original Software Farm was a pioneering British games company based at Fraigo Farm, Botany Bay, Tintern in Wales. It was founded by Julian Chappell, a programmer who achieved the seemingly impossible: high-resolution graphics on the Sinclair ZX81.

Julian spent six months developing a hi-res graphics technique that allowed the ZX81 — a machine with just 1KB of RAM and famously crude block graphics — to display full 256×192 pixel resolution. Many in the industry believed it simply couldn't be done.

Their "High Resolution Range" produced remarkable games. Forty Niner (1982) was the first game to display Spectrum-quality 256×192 pixel graphics on the ZX81, stunning the computing press. Other titles included Rocket Man (1984) and Bouncing Bert (1985), and the company also published games for the Apple II and other platforms.

Advertising in Sinclair User magazine and Your Computer magazine, The Software Farm was part of a golden era of British bedroom coding — a time when lone programmers and tiny teams pushed hardware to its absolute limits and created something magical.

The New Software Farm

Software Farm Limited was founded by a bunch of chaps who grew up in the 80s playing the games created by the original Software Farm, inspired by that very same original company — the one that sparked their love of programming as teenagers. Seeing those impossible graphics on the ZX81 lit a fire that never went out.

The new Software Farm carries forward the spirit of inventive, fun game-making. Based in the UK, we focus on HTML5 browser games — no downloads, no installs, just play. The same philosophy of pushing technology to bring joy to players, updated for the modern web.

The Zombie Farmyard series is our flagship franchise, blending retro arcade classics with farmyard chaos and the beloved Cosmic Cockerel — the original Software Farm mascot who watches over it all - lets face it, he's such a cool character how could we resist resurrecting him as our logo!

From arcade action to ambitious MMORPGs, our upcoming titles span the full spectrum of gaming.
